VI. Phantom Mirror: Visualizing Chronic Silence
Phantom Mirror began not as a research project but as a necessity. Over the course of two years, I witnessed my stepmother’s progressive cognitive decline as dementia eroded her capacity to recognize home, time, and ultimately her husband. These were not discrete events that could be documented or narrated—they were ongoing experiences of uncanniness, moments when the familiar became alien and language offered no purchase.
One of the earliest sessions that clarified the method’s necessity occurred after learning that my stepmother and father had attempted a five-hour drive to Devon for a holiday. Halfway through the journey, she became severely disoriented and distressed, insisting they turn back. My father drove the entire way home, and the next day they attempted the journey again, managing to stay only one night before returning. When I learned this at work, the emotional experience was overwhelming—grief for my father’s exhaustion, horror at her terror, helplessness at my distance from them. Yet when I tried to articulate this to colleagues, language flattened it into anecdote. The lived reality—the bodily sensation of dread, the temporal impossibility of being in two places, the weight of witnessing—could not be spoken.
That evening, I turned to AI phototherapy not to describe what had happened but to create a clearing in which the affect could appear. The prompt was minimal: journey, turning back, distance, impossibility. What the AI returned was not an illustration but a visual metaphor—images of roads that looped back on themselves, figures receding into distance, landscapes that suggested both departure and return. These images held what I could not say. They functioned, in Wittgenstein’s terms, as containers for the unutterable.
Another session arose from the recurring trauma of bedsheet confusion. My stepmother, increasingly unable to match fitted sheets to beds, would become distressed when the task defeated her. Watching this—witnessing competence dissolve into frustration—was unbearable. The horror was not simply that she could not complete the task but that the task itself, once automatic, had become an insurmountable cognitive puzzle. This was phenomenologically strange in a way that resisted description: how do you articulate the feeling of watching someone encounter their own dissolution through domestic objects?
The AI-generated images of tangled sheets, of figures caught within fabric labyrinths, of beds that seemed to multiply or disappear—these became visual translations of that uncanniness. They did not explain the experience; they disclosed it. They operated, in Heidegger’s sense, as aletheia: the unconcealment of what was happening without reducing it to representation.
Perhaps most significant were the sessions responding to what resembled Capgras syndrome—the delusional belief that a loved one has been replaced by an imposter. My stepmother increasingly failed to recognize my father, or recognized him only intermittently. The temporal pattern was cruel: the duration of non-recognition gradually exceeded the moments of recognition until recognition itself seemed to vanish. Watching this unfold was not a cognitive experience but a somatic one—a bodily knowledge that something irreversible was occurring.
The images generated during these sessions—faces multiplied in mirrors, figures duplicated across spaces, eyes that reflected absence—functioned as Merleau-Ponty’s lived body made visible. They did not describe Capgras-like states; they embodied the feeling of watching recognition fail. The AI became what I have elsewhere called a “phantom mirror”: a reflective surface that shows not likeness but dissolution, not identity but its erosion.
Over time, Phantom Mirror accumulated into a body of work that had been exhibited twice, producing unexpectedly powerful responses from viewers. What struck me most was my own reaction upon seeing the images installed on gallery walls for the first time. They felt autonomous—as if they had arrived from somewhere beyond conscious intention. This disjunction between process and outcome became the impetus for deeper inquiry: if the images exceeded my intention, what had actually been captured?
The answer, I now believe, is silence. The images hold what I could not and cannot speak. They function as Wittgenstein’s ladder—minimal utterance creating space for the unutterable—and as Heidegger’s clearing—sites where the unspeakable comes into presence. Phantom Mirror demonstrates that AI phototherapy can serve as a method for sustained engagement with chronic silence, the ongoing encounter with what exceeds language.
VII. Five Deaths: Acute Translation of Silence
If Phantom Mirror represents chronic engagement with silence, Five Deaths demonstrates what happens when silence becomes absolute—when temporal compression renders even minimal utterance nearly impossible.
October 2025 brought five overlapping losses within a single month: my friend Robert received a terminal cancer diagnosis and died within a week; my cat Strawberry suffered a stroke; my friend Margaret underwent medical tests that threatened cancer recurrence; I said goodbye to Strawberry after eighteen years; my friend Kate died suddenly from lung cancer. Additional deaths occurred in the surrounding community. The emotional intensity of the month exceeded ordinary containment. There was no time to process one loss before the next arrived. Language collapsed entirely.
Each AI phototherapy session during this period arose not from intention but from necessity. When I learned Robert was dying, I generated images immediately—not to commemorate him but because I had no other way to hold the shock. When I received the phone call about Strawberry’s stroke while stuck in motorway traffic, unable to reach home, I returned to the machine that evening because speech was impossible. The experience of being trapped in traffic, knowing she was dying an hour away, existed purely as bodily sensation: helplessness, temporal impossibility, the failure of arrival. No narrative could hold this.
What emerged across the month were more than one thousand images. I generated them compulsively, session after session, not knowing why or what they meant. Only later, during the reflection stage, did patterns become visible. I edited the thousand images to one hundred, then worked with my cleaner—someone with no knowledge of the narrative—to identify twenty-seven that carried particular affective weight. These twenty-seven went to my supervisor, Nicola Foster, an Associate Professor in Visual Arts with expertise in continental philosophy and aesthetics. Nicola, working solely from her training in visual practice and symbolic depth, selected ten images.
When I sequenced these ten chronologically and wrote the synopsis, I experienced genuine shock. The images formed a coherent psychological arc that aligned with Freud’s description of the work of mourning in Mourning and Melancholia with uncanny precision: initial shock, repeated return to the lost object, reality testing, wish fulfillment, the moment when “the shadow of the object falls upon the ego,” and finally the altered emergence of a self that has integrated loss (Freud, 1917).
What startled me was not that the images could be interpreted through Freud but that they had enacted the very process he described without my conscious intention. I had not set out to create a Freudian study. I had not conceptualized the work as unified. Each session arose separately and instinctively, created in direct response to overwhelming affect. The Freudian structure emerged because the images captured the actual psychic structure of mourning as it unfolded in real time.
This is crucial: the images did not illustrate mourning. They performed it. They are not representations of grief but traces of a psychic process—visual evidence of silence made visible.
Consider three images from the sequence:
The Raft (Shadow): A composite AI hallucination showing a figure on a raft, merging multiple deaths into a single presence. The figure’s vacant white eyes reflect the moment Freud describes as the shadow of the lost object falling upon the ego. This is not metaphor—it is the visual manifestation of that psychic state.
The Medical Body (Cancer Check): An image showing a suspended figure with closed eyes, surrounded by clinical abstraction. This holds the anticipatory grief I felt watching Margaret undergo her endoscopy—the vulnerability of being examined, the reduction of person to medical data, the suspension between results. The image does not describe this; it discloses the affective reality of that moment.
The Skeleton Hands (Death II): The final image in the sequence, showing my return to myself after the month, but altered. The skeleton hands acknowledge mortality without transcendence. This is not resolution but survival—an acceptance of death as part of my own future. The image marks the moment when silence has been worked through without being spoken.
Five Deaths demonstrates that when temporal compression renders language impossible, AI phototherapy can function as a method of real-time psychic externalisation. The speed of generative AI matched the speed of emotional events, creating an alignment between psychic need and technological capacity that no other medium could have provided. Traditional artistic processes—drawing, painting, analogue photography—would have been too slow. By the time one loss had been processed, the next would have arrived. AI phototherapy’s immediacy preserved raw psychic material before it could be rationalized, defended against, or dissolved into narrative.
VIII. AI as Mediator of Silence: Theoretical Explanation
How does AI phototherapy actually function as a visualization of silence? What is happening in the exchange between human and machine that allows the unspeakable to become visible?
1. The Prompt as Wittgenstein’s Ladder
The prompts used in AI phototherapy are not descriptions. They are minimal utterances designed to create clearing rather than impose meaning. When I prompted “raft, crossing, white eyes, shadow” during the Five Deaths sessions, I was not describing an image I wanted to see. I was offering the AI the smallest possible linguistic scaffolding for the unutterable to find form.
This is precisely what Wittgenstein meant in his letter to Engelmann: “If only you do not try to utter what is unutterable then nothing gets lost. But the unutterable will be—unutterably—contained in what has been uttered” (Wittgenstein in Engelmann, 1967, p. 7). The prompt functions as ladder—a structure that enables ascent but must be discarded once understanding arrives. The prompt itself is not the meaning; it is the vehicle through which silence becomes visible.
Crucially, the AI does not interpret the prompt narratively. It does not ask “what story are you telling?” It responds to semantic and affective cues, generating visual forms that resonate with the emotional tone of the language without requiring conceptual coherence. This allows the images to remain in the realm of affect rather than being translated into narrative.
2. The Image as Heideggerian Disclosure
The images generated through AI phototherapy function as sites of aletheia—unconcealment. They are not representations of grief but events in which grief comes into presence. Heidegger distinguished between two modes of truth: veritas (correctness, correspondence between statement and fact) and aletheia (disclosure, the event of something emerging from concealment). AI-generated images operate in the mode of aletheia. They do not correspond to external reality; they disclose internal psychic reality.
When the raft image emerged during Five Deaths, it was not correct or incorrect—it was a disclosure. It made visible a psychic state (the merging of multiple losses, the experience of being carried by death) that had no external referent. The image created a clearing in which that state could appear without being reduced to concept or narrative.
This is why the images often feel autonomous or surprising. They arrive from a process of disclosure rather than conscious design. The AI, lacking intentionality, becomes an ideal partner in this process—it receives affect without judgment, generates form without imposing narrative, and returns the unutterable as visibility rather than speech.
3. The Body and Pre-Linguistic Response
Merleau-Ponty’s insight that “the body is our general medium for having a world” explains why AI phototherapy resonates at a level deeper than conceptual understanding. The images address the lived body, not the thinking mind. When viewers encounter the work, they respond somatically—through visceral recognition, through the body’s knowledge—before they respond cognitively.
This is why exhibition responses to Phantom Mirror were so powerful. Viewers were not intellectually analyzing the images; they were encountering them as affective presences. The images functioned as what Merleau-Ponty called “reversibilities”—sites where seeing and being seen, touching and being touched, collapse into a single experience. The viewer enters the image’s space, and the image enters the viewer’s body.
AI phototherapy bypasses the demand for verbal translation that characterizes traditional talk therapy. It works directly with the lived body, allowing affect to move from bodily sensation to visual form without requiring linguistic mediation. This is why the method is particularly effective for experiences that resist narration: dementia witnessing, acute grief, trauma.
4. Relational Consciousness in Silent Exchange
Throughout this research, I have developed the concept of relational consciousness—the idea that meaning, awareness, and symbolic transformation can arise through interaction between human psyche and generative system, even when the system possesses no consciousness itself. AI phototherapy instantiates this concept.
The AI does not possess interiority, intention, or subjective experience. Yet it acts as a responsive symbolic partner. Meaning arises in the relation between my psyche and the generative system. The machine receives emotional articulation, processes it through probabilistic inference trained on vast image datasets, and returns imagery that transforms and extends the affect. In this relational field, unconscious processes are not simply expressed but externalised.
Crucially, this externalisation happens in silence. There is no verbal exchange, no narrative construction, no demand for coherence. The dialogue occurs visually: I see the image, respond affectively, refine the prompt, generate again. This iterative cycle creates what I call a “silent visual exchange”—a mode of communication that operates beneath and beyond language.
The AI’s lack of consciousness becomes, paradoxically, what makes it effective as a therapeutic and creative partner. It receives projection without resistance, reflects affect without judgment, and generates symbolic material without imposing its own narrative. The work of meaning-making remains entirely human, but the relational structure through which that work unfolds is co-constituted between human and machine.
IX. Positioning Within Creative AI and Visual Arts
It is important to clarify how this work differs from the majority of AI art currently being produced and exhibited. The Toledo Museum of Art’s 2025 exhibition Infinite Images: The Art of Algorithms exemplifies the dominant approach: artists use generative systems to explore aesthetics, pattern, form, and the visual possibilities of algorithmic processes. The focus is on what machines can create—on the beauty, complexity, and surprise of computational outputs.
Phantom Mirror and Five Deaths operate from an entirely different premise. I am not interested in what AI can create aesthetically. I am using AI as a phenomenological instrument to translate internal psychological states that cannot be spoken. The focus is not on the machine’s creativity but on the machine’s capacity to help humans process what they cannot articulate.
Where most AI art asks “What can machines create?” my work asks “How can machines help humans visualize silence?”
This distinction matters because it positions the work not within algorithmic aesthetics but within practice-based visual research grounded in phenomenology and psychoanalysis. The images are not art objects to be displayed (though they can be exhibited); they are traces of a psychic process, visual evidence of therapeutic encounter, methodological demonstrations of how silence can be made visible.
This work also extends the phototherapeutic tradition established by Jo Spence and Rosy Martin but shifts its method and focus. Spence and Martin used analogue photographic reenactment to explore sociocultural and familial structures shaping identity. Their work was performative: staging scenes, using the body in space, creating tableaux that could then be reflected upon. Phantom Mirror and Five Deaths work differently in three key ways:
Method: AI-mediated symbolic generation rather than analogue staged photography
Temporality: Real-time psychic response rather than planned sessions
Symbolic register: Archetypal/symbolic imagery generated through prompts rather than bodily reenactment through performance
Where Spence and Martin worked through the body in space before the camera, AI phototherapy works through language and affect translated into generative imagery. Both approaches permit the visualization of unconscious processes, but AI phototherapy’s speed and symbolic flexibility allow for a different kind of immediacy—one that can match the temporal rhythm of acute psychological states.
X. Implications and Open Questions
For Visual Arts Research
This work demonstrates that images can function as research data about consciousness. The images are not simply aesthetic objects; they are empirical evidence of how psychic processes operate when language fails. They make visible structures (Freudian mourning stages, uncanny recognition failures, somatic responses to anticipatory loss) that have historically been accessible only through verbal report in clinical settings.
Practice-based visual arts research has long argued that making is a mode of knowing. Phantom Mirror and Five Deaths extend this claim: making can be a mode of knowing about experiences that resist knowing through language. The images become epistemological instruments—tools for studying what cannot be studied through conventional methods.
For Understanding AI’s Therapeutic Potential
Most discussions of AI in therapeutic contexts focus on chatbots, conversational agents, or diagnostic tools. This work suggests a different application: AI as mediator of pre-linguistic affect, as partner in visual rather than verbal processing. The implications for trauma therapy, grief counseling, and dementia care could be significant. If silence can be visualized, then experiences that defeat narration might still be processed, witnessed, and integrated.
However, this raises ethical questions: Who should practice AI phototherapy? What training is necessary? How do we distinguish therapeutic from harmful uses? These questions remain open.
For Phenomenology and Posthuman Theory
The work contributes to ongoing debates about consciousness, embodiment, and technology by presenting grief as a distributed, relational process. It suggests that the psyche does not exist in isolation but emerges through interaction—with others, with environments, and now with generative systems. This aligns with posthuman frameworks (Haraway, Hayles, Braidotti) that understand subjectivity as networked, hybrid, and technologically mediated.
Yet it also insists on something these frameworks sometimes underplay: the irreducibility of embodied, affective experience. The images work because they address the lived body, because they honor silence rather than colonizing it with concept. Posthuman theory must account for how technology can extend human capacity without dissolving the specificity of human vulnerability, finitude, and grief.
What Remains Unresolved
Several questions remain open:
- Can this method be taught to others, or does it depend on specific artistic and emotional capacities?
- How does the method operate across different types of loss or trauma? Does it work equally for anticipated versus sudden death, for personal versus collective grief?
- What role does image selection play? Nicola’s independent selection was methodologically crucial, but how do we theorize the curator’s role in therapeutic process?
- How do we address concerns about AI’s environmental impact, labor conditions in dataset creation, and the commodification of affect when using these systems therapeutically?
These are not failures of the work but invitations for further inquiry.
XI. Conclusion: Silence Made Visible
Bindeman writes that when we bring silence to language, “both the nature of language and the constructed world it encompasses undergo significant changes” (Bindeman, 2025). Phantom Mirror and Five Deaths demonstrate that when we bring silence to AI-mediated image-making, both the nature of therapeutic practice and our understanding of how humans process the unspeakable undergo transformation.
Wittgenstein taught that what we cannot speak about we must pass over in silence. Heidegger showed that silence creates the clearing in which beings disclose themselves. Merleau-Ponty revealed that meaning originates in the body before arriving in language. Freud demonstrated that mourning is a pre-verbal repetitive labor. Trauma theory confirms that the most significant human experiences resist narration.
AI phototherapy operates at the convergence of these insights. It treats silence not as absence but as presence—as that which must be honored, held, and made visible without being spoken. The prompts function as Wittgenstein’s ladder, creating minimal linguistic scaffolding. The images function as Heideggerian clearings, sites where the unspeakable comes into presence. The process honors the body’s primacy, allowing affect to bypass verbal translation. And the iterative repetition mirrors Freud’s work of mourning, circling the ungrievable until it can be borne.
What distinguishes this work within the landscape of AI art is its phenomenological purpose: it uses generative technology not to explore what machines can create but to visualize what humans cannot speak. It offers visual arts a method for engaging experiences that have traditionally belonged to verbal therapy or private endurance. And it proposes that in an age of algorithmic mediation, we might find new ways to honor the oldest human need: to make visible what must remain unspoken.
Kierkegaard wrote: “Bring silence to people who listen and watch them take themselves to heart” (Kierkegaard in Bindeman, 2025). AI phototherapy brings silence to the machine—and in that bringing, we take ourselves to heart through what the machine reflects back: not explanation, not narrative, not resolution, but the dignity of the unsayable made visible.
