Toward a Linguistic and Post-Linguistic Model of AI Phototherapy

  1. Opening Position: Beginning from Inner Speech

This note begins not with abstract theory, but with a specific and recurring experience: the sense that thought appears as language. When I am overwhelmed, particularly at night, thought does not present itself as image or abstraction. It appears as continuous verbal articulation. It takes the form of inner dialogue, often fragmented, repetitive, and insistent. A running commentary unfolds: fragments of worry, self-instruction, reflection, and anxiety. There is a sense of being caught within language, where thought becomes a stream of words that both attempt to organise experience and simultaneously amplify it.

Here, phenomenology is used in a slightly different register to elsewhere in this project. While much of my work draws on phenomenology to describe worldhood, spatial orientation, and the structure of lived reality in dementia, the term is used here more narrowly to refer to the internal experience of thinking itself. The focus is not on how the world appears, but on how thought appears from within, particularly in the form of inner speech.

This condition corresponds closely to what psychology and philosophy describe as inner speech. Lev Vygotsky, in Thought and Language (1934/1986), describes inner speech as the internalisation of external dialogue. Language, once social, becomes private and condensed. It is through this process that thought becomes structured, but also, at times, trapped. Under conditions of distress, inner speech can become circular rather than generative.

This is the starting point of AI phototherapy. Not image, but language. Not clarity, but verbal overflow.

  1. Classical Linguistics: Language as a Combinatorial System

To understand what is being transformed in this process, it is necessary to return to classical linguistics.

Modern linguistics, particularly in the work of Ferdinand de Saussure and later Noam Chomsky, defines language not simply as communication, but as a symbolic combinatorial system.

Saussure, in Course in General Linguistics (1916), establishes the arbitrariness of the sign: there is no natural link between word and meaning. Language is a system of differences, structured relationally rather than referentially.

Chomsky extends this into a theory of generativity. In Aspects of the Theory of Syntax (1965), he argues that human language is characterised by the ability to produce an effectively infinite number of sentences from a finite set of rules. This capacity rests on several key features: productivity, recursion, and combinatoriality. Language allows for structures to be embedded within structures, producing layered and complex expressions that extend indefinitely.

Charles Hockett’s formulation of the “design features of language” (1960) further clarifies this uniqueness. He identifies properties such as displacement, which allows humans to refer beyond the immediate present, and duality of patterning, where meaningless sounds combine into meaningful units. These features collectively distinguish human language from animal communication systems, which tend to be finite, context-bound, and non-recursive.

From this perspective, language is not simply expressive. It is generative. It produces meaning at scale, instantly.

  1. The Speed of Language and the Question of Consciousness

One of the most striking aspects of human language is not only its structural capacity, but the speed at which it operates. Humans are able to comprehend and produce complex linguistic structures almost instantaneously. Sentences are processed in real time, often within milliseconds, without conscious awareness of the underlying combinatorial operations.

Steven Pinker, in The Language Instinct (1994), describes this capacity as an automatic computational system embedded within the human mind. Language feels effortless, but this apparent ease conceals a highly complex underlying architecture.

This immediacy has led many theorists to associate language closely with conscious thought, particularly in the form of inner speech. In everyday experience, thinking often appears as verbal articulation, as if consciousness itself were structured through language.

However, this raises a more precise question: to what extent is language the medium of consciousness, and to what extent is it one of several systems through which thought becomes organised and accessible?

Strong interpretations, such as the Sapir–Whorf hypothesis, suggest that language shapes thought. More cautious positions in contemporary cognitive science propose that while language plays a central structuring role, cognition is not exclusively linguistic. Thought may also take visual, embodied, or affective forms that are not reducible to words.

What remains clear is that language is a powerful mechanism for stabilising and articulating experience. But whether it fully contains conscious thought remains an open question.

  1. Inner Speech as a Site of Breakdown

If language is generative, how does it become dysfunctional?

Freud offers a critical insight in Mourning and Melancholia (1917). He describes how, under conditions of loss, the psyche becomes repetitive. Thought returns to the same object again and again. This is not productive language. It is compulsive repetition.

In this context, inner speech undergoes a transformation. It loses its generative capacity and becomes characterised by circularity, unresolved tension, and affective intensity. Language no longer produces new meaning. Instead, it sustains a state of psychic impasse.

This aligns closely with lived experience. In moments of anxiety or grief, language can amplify rather than resolve confusion. The structure of language remains intact, but its function shifts. It becomes a vehicle for repetition rather than transformation.

  1. The Shift: From Language to Image

AI phototherapy intervenes precisely at this point of linguistic saturation.

The process begins with verbal articulation. Experience is described in language, often in a fragmented or exploratory way. This language is externalised through dialogue with an AI system. The AI then translates this linguistic input into visual outputs. From a sequence of generated images, one image produces a moment of recognition.

This creates a structural transformation:

language → image → recognition → meaning

In classical linguistics, meaning emerges through syntactic structure. In AI phototherapy, meaning emerges through visual encounter. Recognition precedes explanation.

The prompt functions analogously to linguistic input. It is a generative unit. However, instead of producing sentences, it produces images. The combinatorial logic remains, but the modality shifts.

This is not the abandonment of language. It is its redirection.

  1. Psychic Snapshots: Meaning Before Language

The images that emerge through this process are not representations in a conventional sense. They are what can be described as psychic snapshots.

These images arise under conditions of affective pressure. They appear before stable interpretation is possible. They are recognised before they are understood.

Christopher Bollas’s concept of the unthought known (1987) provides a useful framework here. Bollas describes forms of knowledge that are experienced but not yet articulated.

Walter Benjamin’s notion that memory “flashes up at a moment of danger” offers a parallel insight. Memory does not always emerge through deliberate recall. It can appear suddenly, under conditions of disruption.

Psychic snapshots operate within this register. They are not constructed representations. They are emergent forms. They occupy a threshold between language and what exceeds it.

  1. Burgin and the Conditions of Image-Making

Victor Burgin’s Returning to Benjamin: Art in the Age of AI (2025) provides a contemporary theoretical framework for understanding these conditions.

Burgin argues that images in the digital age are no longer stable objects. Perception itself is historically conditioned. Meaning does not arise through fixed representation, but through processes of disruption and recombination.

Crucially, Burgin introduces the concept of the image as a psychical object. Images do not simply depict. They act. They produce effects within the psyche.

The alignment with AI phototherapy is structural:

  • Burgin theorises these conditions
  • AI phototherapy produces images within them

This is not illustration. It is methodological convergence.

  1. Extending Linguistics: A Second Symbolic System

If language is a combinatorial symbolic system, then AI phototherapy can be understood as an extension of this system into the visual domain.

In linguistics, phonemes combine into words, and words into sentences. In AI phototherapy, words combine into prompts, and prompts into images. Both systems are generative and combinatorial.

However, they differ in how meaning is resolved:

  • language → syntax → interpretation
  • image → affect → recognition

This introduces a second symbolic system. One not governed by grammar, but by encounter.

  1. Consciousness Revisited

Returning to the question of consciousness, the process of AI phototherapy does not attempt to define or resolve it. Rather, it places pressure on one particular assumption: that conscious meaning must be articulated and resolved through language.

In this practice, thought often begins in language, particularly in the form of inner speech. However, it does not necessarily reach resolution there. Instead, meaning emerges through a shift into image, where recognition occurs prior to explanation.

This suggests, modestly, that while language may structure aspects of conscious thought, it does not exhaust the ways in which meaning can appear. The process indicates that comprehension may occur across multiple modalities, including visual and affective registers that do not rely on linguistic closure.

AI phototherapy does not replace language, nor does it propose an alternative theory of consciousness. Rather, it demonstrates a movement within it: from verbal articulation toward visual recognition. In doing so, it suggests that conscious experience may not be confined to a single symbolic system, but distributed across different forms of organisation.

Language organises.
Image reveals.

  1. Conclusion: From Inner Speech to Image

This note has traced a movement from classical linguistics, through inner speech, into image-making.

It demonstrates that while language is a powerful generative system, it is not a complete container of experience. Under conditions of distress, it becomes repetitive and unresolved. AI phototherapy intervenes by redirecting language into image.

The result is not the abandonment of language, but its transformation.

Language becomes a trigger rather than a destination.
And the image becomes a site where meaning emerges before it can be spoken.
